Job Description Summary

We are seeking a Senior Operational Risk Analyst responsible for executing second line of defense responsibilities and playing a critical role in helping to ensure that the business lines and corporate functions to which you are assigned are aware of the operational risks arising from their activities and decisions, as well as opportunities to reduce, mitigate, and monitor operational risks through execution of the Bank’s operational risk management programs by providing advice, counsel, independent oversight, and check & challenge of assigned activities and programs associated with operational risk management for Bank of the West.

Essential Job Functions

You will be responsible for performing Second Line of Defense Operational Risk Management duties including:

Developing awareness of the activities, products, and/or services performed by the business lines/functions (“BL/function”) to which you are assigned and awareness of the state of implementation and execution of the operational risk framework within the BL/function by fostering relationships with both business management and the First Line of Defense Control & Governance team.

Fostering implementation of the Operational Risk framework within the assigned BL/function, by partnering with BL/function to provide awareness of permanent control framework.

Monitoring, reviewing, and performing check & challenge of activities performed by the First Line of Defense to ensure that assigned BL/function(s) have implemented the Operational Risk Program and are executing effectively required activities such as RCSA, Loss data collection, Control Plan development and maintenance, KRI/KSP reporting, Issue Management etc., in accordance with the Bank’s policies and standards.

Tracking resolution of issues and participating, as appropriate, in pre-submission reviews and closure validation.

Contributing to formal reporting on the state of operational risks to business line senior management and Group Executives on ORMs independent view of the risk and control environment, as needed.

Participating in evaluating new products/services (i.e. New Activities), changes to the channels through which products are offered, and technology impact assessments for their impacts on the bank's or LOBs operational risk profile.

Fostering relationships with other risk partners (Third Party Management, Business Continuity, Fraud Prevention, Model Risk, Technology Risk, etc.).

Participating in proper governance and oversight of overall Operational Risk profiles for the assigned BL/Function, participating in sub-Internal Control Committee for oversite of the execution of the operational risk management standards and procedures; emerging risk trends, KRIs, incident reporting, timely closure of audit findings, self-identified issues, open action plans, etc.

Advising business unit managers on operational risk management issues. Recommending possible solutions, and working with the business to designate appropriate and timely remediation.

Ensuring understanding and accessibility for the assigned 1st Line, of all changes, communications and requirements.

  • Participating in initiatives to mature the Banks Operational Risk program and build relationships with other 2LOD programs and 1LOD businesses and functions to grow your career path.

Other Job Duties

  • Operational Risk Department: Assigned responsibility for broad areas of the Bank's Corporate Operational Risk Management function, ensures assigned areas are well designed, looks for and implements continuous process improvement, is a subject matter expert in their areas, and able to communicate/educate others on the process.

  • Business Group Operational Risk Support Assigned specific LOB OR activities. Undertakes complex assessments of business unit exposures, identifying risks, analyzing and evaluating their potential impact and reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of the firm's existing controls. Requires collaboration and partnering within ORC and across business lines/support groups.

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • Requires deep knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience.

  • Typically viewed as a specialist within discipline.

  • May have broad knowledge of project management.

  • Requires 7 years minimum prior relevant experience.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree Business Administration) or the equivalent combination of education and experience
