Job Description Summary

The Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) and Sustainability Lead is responsible to lead and manage two key programs within the Bank for shared services under the Enterprise Business Services division. This position will provide oversight for strategy while being responsible for the implementation of each goal and KPI, as well as reporting, across the Banks shared service operations including corporate real estate. The ideal candidate should have a deep and broad knowledge of the relevant landscape for these areas within retail operations-oriented companies, including compliance and regulations. This role is expected to work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and external suppliers, and should care deeply about environmental, safety, and governance impacts of the Company.

The Bank of the West real estate portfolio is comprised of 4.8M SF and houses approx. 9,000 employees across a 19 state footprint.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop, refine, implement and manage corporate strategy for responsible programs: Sustainability and EH&S.

  • Uses data to drive improvement plans and track progress against the strategy/goals and industry benchmarks. Identify incremental opportunities to expand the programs and reinforce the Bank’s commitment to conduct socially responsible business activities.

  • Collaborates/leads on development and management of enterprise-level reporting that allows for quarterly and ongoing reporting program progress to Bank’s Senior Management.

  • Stays abreast of regulatory changes, trends and information concerning EH&S and sustainability and leads applicable Bank responses or actions.

  • Provide subject matter expertise in refinement of policies, procedures, tools, templates with regard to sustainability, health and safety (RFPs, Contracts, marketing materials, etc.).

  • Engage the Bank’s Senior Management to support adoption of the Program’s maturity efforts.

Sustainability (60%):

  • Actively participates and collaborates with others across BNPP and BOTW for the achievement of sustainability business goals by:

  • Working with diverse stakeholders to develop, coordinate, and implement strategies and measures to reduce, monitor, and “green” BOTWs footprint.

  • Working with business partners to design strategies and deliver programs to increase stakeholder engagement, awareness and commitment to sustainability.

  • Work closely with 3rd party providers towards sustainability initiatives including:

  • Taking an active role on issues related to energy procurement and energy-related capital projects, renewable/carbon and critical environments.

  • Working with construction management teams to insure the implementation of life cycle cost evaluation approaches which explicitly include energy and sustainability considerations.

  • Working with sourcing teams to insure the implementation of sustainable practices within supply chains and product offerings in line with the Banks overall goals.

EH&S (40%):

  • Establishes EH&S strategies, goals and safety management systems necessary to achieve excellence across all Bank of the West (BOTW) locations, to reduce the risk of health and safety incidents and communicates these widely, ensuring engagement across the organization.

  • Works with individual offices to ensure appropriate levels of EH&S resources are maintained, such as fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, first aid kits, AEDs, disaster preparedness supplies. Develop and maintain policies and standards for maintenance of safety equipment in branches and offices.

  • Provide oversight and guidance to site EH&S leaders to ensure their continued development and success.

  • Conduct and/or oversee EH&S risk assessments at BOTW branches as required.

  • Work closely with the CRE team and its third party vendors to ensure compliance with applicable safety codes, ergonomic and other health and safety best practices.

  • Lead investigations of safety incidents and provide well-articulated reports, briefings, and after action recommendations.

Other Job Functions:

  • Remain current and conversant with changing and applicable laws, regulations and standards at all locations and assures enterprise-wide compliance.

  • Establish and/or participate in cross functional committees throughout the Bank and the broader BNP Paribas network in order to establish a network of ambassadors to enable the sharing of best practices, drive continuing education and rollout enterprise-wide programs and other initiatives.

  • Represents Bank of the West at industry and other outreach events to support opportunity growth.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety or Sustainability or related discipline.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Required Experience

  • Eight to ten year’s progressive experience leading similar programs (Sustainability and EH&S) in a multi-site organization with a proven record of establishing effective programs and delivering continuous performance improvements.

  • Significant experience establishing and managing similar programs (Sustainability and EH&S) including development of procedures, KPIs and governance structure.

  • Knowledge in the technical fundamentals of safety management and risk assessments, including ergonomics, emergency action plans, company safety teams, IIPs, etc.

  • Knowledge and experience in sourcing of products and services, including bidding processes, contractual negotiations, and purchasing.

  • Understanding of key sustainability issues with an emphasis on Environmental topics and how they can be integrated into business to create measurable value.

  • Must have strong leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to consistently be persuasive and credible across multiple hierarchical levels and cultures resulting in improved performance.

  • Demonstrated baseline understanding of the global and US landscape of major EH&S related regulations, including OSHA and the ability to reach out to partners/resources to develop in-depth knowledge where required.

  • Knowledge of sustainability requirements of local legislation, standards and international best practice.

  • Program related licenses, certifications and/or membership in related professional associations are desired.
