Job Description Summary

Responsible for making credit worthy decisions on complex commercial transactions to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with the company guidelines and standards. Advanced expertise on commercial loans

Essential Job Functions

  • Underwrite complex C&I and CRE credits for U.S. based business borrowers that may have related international parent entities / subsidiaries and third-party vendors or customers in Asia.

  • Review and evaluate financial statements and disclosures (CPA audited or reviewed financial statements, company-prepared financial statements, business and personal tax returns, and personal financial statements) for credit worthiness and ensure compliance with all federal and state laws regulations and Bank policies and procedures.

  • Analyze customer’s debt-to-income ratio, loan-to-value ratio, credit report, application, income and assets, source(s) of down payment funds and supporting documentation. Identify credit strengths, weaknesses, industry risks, and anomalies that lead to further investigation.

  • Communicate and collaborate with Relationship Managers on collecting information and documentation necessary to finalize incomplete loan packages and answering potential loan request questions.

  • Prepare a comprehensive credit summary in conjunction with the Relationship Managers and Credit Manager to address all material aspects of the credit request.

  • Maintain knowledge of loan product guidelines, internal policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.

  • Assist with annual reviews and portfolio management credit actions. Identify and address risk rating change requirements and potential problem loans.

  • Perform duties and responsibilities specific to department functions and activities.

  • Cross train other team members when applicable.

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or economic is preferred.

  • 7 years of experience in underwriting and credit related analysis, preferably in the banking industry.

  • Expert level knowledge of underwriting and regulatory requirements.

  • Must be attentive to detail and possess excellent analytical, written and verbal communication and organization skills. Ability to understand complex problems and recommend solutions.

  • Experience reviewing complex financial documents such as business and/or personal tax returns, K-1 schedules and financial statements.

  • Ability to meet productivity expectations in a fast paced, high volume pipeline environment while maintaining good product quality and satisfactory internal and external customer results.

  • Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple underwriting files simultaneously.

  • Strong teamwork and partnering skills with ability to effectively manage the expectations of internal and external customers and constituents.

  • Intermediate skills in computer terminal and personal computer operation; Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or economic is preferred.

Skills

  • Expert level knowledge of underwriting / credit analysis and regulatory requirements.

  • Expert knowledge of Bank of the West Policy and Procedures.

  • Expert understanding of various regulatory/compliance policy and procedure including but not limited to Fair Lending, OFAC, Flood, Regulation O, highly leveraged transactions, etc.

  • Meet and/or exceed our Service Level Agreement commitment.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and other system applications.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills.
